Buckeyes Travel to Notre Dame for CWPA Action

COLUMBUS - The Buckeyes will travel to Notre Dame for the second CWPA Great Lakes division tournament on September 23rd and 24th. Between the two teams, the Buckeyes will play in six games over the two days.

The Scarlet Buckeyes will start the tournament against the Cincinnati Bearcats at 12:00 p.m., followed by No. 20 Notre Dame at 3:00 p.m., and will face Illinois State at 6:00 p.m. to conclude the weekend. Due to Xavier forfeiting the weekend, Ohio State's final game will be recorded as a 5-0 victory. The Buckeyes are currently tied with Cincinnati and Notre Dame for first place in the division.

The Gray Buckeyes will match up with Miami (OH) at 1:00p.m. on Saturday Sept. 23, No. 8 Grand Valley at 4:00 p.m., and Dayton at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 24 to conclude the weekend. Due to Xavier forfeiting the weekend, Ohio State's final game will be recorded as a 5-0 victory.

Teams will be seeded at the 2017 CWPA Great Lakes Division Championship based on their performance in both Great Lakes division tournaments. The championship will be held at Ohio State in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on October 21-22.

Scarlet Team Goes Undefeated in First CWPA Weekend, Gray Team Improves Team Play

COLUMBUS – Ohio State hosted the first of three CWPA Great Lakes division tournaments last weekend. The next tournament will be at Notre Dame this weekend, Sept. 23-24, followed by the division championships at Ohio State on Oct. 21-22.

The Scarlet team's first opponent of the weekend was the Dayton Flyers and the Buckeyes walked away with a 16-1 victory. The Buckeyes' second game of Saturday was against another in-state foe, Miami (OH). Overcoming a slow start, the Buckeyes won easily 14-5 to conclude their first day.

Sunday's main event would be a meeting between the Buckeyes and Lakers of Grand Valley, a rematch of last year's division championship game. Trading goals the whole game, the Buckeyes managed to score the final three goals of the game and take the victory, 9-7.

The Gray team went 0-3 over the weekend with losses to Cincinnati (5-8), Notre Dame (2-14), and Illinois State (4-8). With many 2016-17 Gray team members now contributing to the Scarlet team, the Gray Buckeyes were focused on becoming a cohesive unit and improvement was seen in every game.

The last scheduled game for the tournament was Scarlet vs. Gray, and is recorded as a 5-0 forfeit victory in favor of Scarlet to prevent goal manipulation, per CWPA guidelines.

Ohio State Hosts Great Lakes Division Tournament this Weekend

Buckeyes open 2017 division play against Dayton at 11:00 a.m. at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

COLUMBUS – Ohio State opens the 2017 CWPA season this weekend at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes will open with Dayton at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 and will face Miami (OH) at 3:00 p.m. The Buckeyes will conclude with No. 9 Grand Valley at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17 and a scrimmage with OSU-Gray at 3:00 p.m.

The Gray team Buckeyes will play Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m., No. 20 Notre Dame at 4:00 p.m., and Illinois State at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. Ohio State will conclude the weekend with a scrimmage against OSU-Scarlet at 3:00 p.m.

Games will be running from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.

The football team has a home game versus Army at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Please take that into consideration when traveling to campus.

The Buckeyes Host Labor Day Tournament this Weekend

Ohio State opens the 2017 season this weekend at the Labor Day Tournament at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes will open with 3-time defending national champions Lindenwood at 1:30 p.m. and will face 3-time defending Division III national champions Wash. U. St. Louis at 5:30 p.m. The Buckeyes will conclude the weekend with a Sunday morning game against Penn State at 9:00 a.m., followed by Lindenwood B at 1:00 p.m..

The Gray team will match up with Columbus Masters at 10:30 a.m., Michigan State at 2:30 p.m., and Lindenwood B at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, and on Sunday they will play Wash. U. St. Louis at 12:00 p.m. to end the weekend.

This weekend will serve as building block for the team as they prepare for the CWPA season, where both teams will look to improve upon their 2nd (Scarlet) and 7th (Gray) place finishes last year in the Great Lakes division.

Spring Semester Recap & Year Wrap-Up

After the fall season, where the Scarlet team finished 2nd in the division and Gray finished 7th, a number of individual awards were bestowed upon the Buckeyes.  Senior Matt Gustafson was named First Team All-Conference and junior Ryan Shepard was named to Second Team All-Conference as the goalie selection.

The team's success in the classroom was also recognized, the Buckeyes had the 12th best team GPA in the CWPA. Graduate students Miguel Garza and Daniel Kent, seniors Alex Severson, Carl Calcara, Drace Penley, Matt Gustafson, Stephen Maldonado, and Stephen Ioas, junior Nick Hallett, sophomores David Drewes and Andrew Alfred, and freshmen Alex Puthoff, Jacob Good, Luke Bockbrader, Robert DiSalle, and Ignatius Brossart were all recognized for their academic excellence.

While not the primary season, the spring still provides ample opportunities for the Buckeyes to play. The first opportunity was the Nutty Invitational, where both Scarlet and Gray competed. Scarlet team went 2-2 (L vs. South Florida WPC,  W vs. Team Chicago, W vs. Cleveland, L vs. Ohio Squirrels) and the Gray team went 3-1 (L vs. Dayton, W vs. Western Michigan, W vs. Xavier, W vs. Moose WPC).

The last two tournaments of the year, the Buckeyes traveled as one team. First up was the classic Dogwood Invitational. On a sunny Saturday, the Buckeyes beat University of Tennessee, Tennessee's Alumni, and Northwestern before falling to Columbus Masters in the evening. Sunday brought another match up with Tennessee Alumni, which the Buckeyes won handily to end the weekend.

Second was the Tar Heel Invitational at the University of North Carolina. The team started off beating the host Tar Heels, then fell to Triangle Water Polo, before defeating the University of Virginia and the Charlotte Sharks on Sunday.

The Buckeyes ended the year with a 21-7 record for the Scarlet team and a 7-12 record for the Gray team.

This year we have had many graduates. Michael Headlee and Dan DiSalle graduated in the fall, and this spring John Collier, Matt Gustafson, Drace Penley, Geoff Dickhaut, Carl Calcara, Daniel Hottois, Connor Aossey, Nico Salavaggione, and Alex Severson are all graduating. We wish them luck in their future endeavors.

Buckeyes Struggle During Their Championship Weekend

The Buckeyes have recently returned from a weekend at the University of Notre Dame, where the 2016 Great Lakes division championship was being hosted. Over the weekend, the Scarlet team finished second and the Gray team finished seventh.

To start the weekend, Scarlet met Gray in a first round matchup. A fun, intense game for all led to a 14-7 Scarlet victory and a spot in the semi-finals for Scarlet while Gray would battle for fifth through seventh. The next game for the Buckeyes would see the Gray team facing Miami (OH). After a close game earlier in the season, the Gray Buckeyes were eager to see what they could do. They were able to keep it close in the beginning but couldn't handle the intensity of the experience RedHawks in the latter part of the game, and the Buckeyes fell 8-15.

In the semi-final game, the Scarlet team would face in-state rival University of Cincinnati. Playing under a new coach, the Bearcats were fired up and came out strong, leading during part of the first quarter. The Buckeyes would overcome their slow start and run away with it, winning 12-4 and securing a spot in the Great Lakes division championship game on Sunday.

The Buckeyes battled the Lakers of Grand Valley State University for the championship. Unable to get the offense going, the Buckeyes fell into a 1-5 deficit at halftime. The Buckeyes were unable to claw their way back, eventually falling 4-9 and finishing second in the division.

To end the weekend, the Gray team faced Illinois State. Trading goals to start the game gave the Buckeyes an early lead, but they couldn't keep up with the Redbirds' counter attack. The Buckeyes would fall 7-14 and finish seventh.

The Scarlet team finishes the season 12-3 (9-2 CWPA) and the Gray team finishes 4-11 (4-7 CWPA).

Buckeyes finish regular season strong at home

Over the weekend, the Buckeyes hosted the last regular season games for the Great Lakes division. The Scarlet team went 4-0 while the Gray team went 3-1 to finish second and seventh in the conference, respectively.

The first game for the Buckeyes saw the Scarlet team taking on the University of Chicago. A deep bench allowed the Buckeyes to easily pull away, winning 21-5. Next up was the Gray team, who played in-state foe Xavier University. It was a hard fought battle but the Buckeyes pulled out a 10-8 win.

In the evening, the Gray team matched up against Illinois State, the third seeded team in the conference. After tying 3-3 in the first half, the Redbirds would pull away, and the Gray team fell 5-11. Scarlet would end the day with a 17-2 win over a Loyola University team that had no subs.

Early Sunday morning, the Gray team met University of Chicago. Eager to get back on track, the Buckeyes played hard and won 9-7, which included a buzzer beater goal from goalie Tyler McKenna. Next, the Scarlet team would face the Redbirds of Illinois State. Wanting to assert their dominance, the Scarlet team relentlessly attacked the Redbirds, resulting in a 19-5 victory. Due to Miami forfeiting their last game, the Scarlet team received a 5-0 forfeit victory to end the weekend.

The Gray team would end the weekend against an exhausted Loyola University, winning 20-5.

Gray team goalie, Tyler McKenna, would earn Player of the week honors for his stellar play over the weekend.

The Buckeyes will now make their final preparations for the Great Lakes Division Championship on November 5-6 at the University of Notre Dame. With the Scarlet team seeded second and the Gray team seeded seventh, they will open up the weekend against each other. 

Buckeyes compete in CWPA Great Lakes Tournament

On September 24th and 25th, the Buckeyes were at Miami University competing in their first CWPA tournament of the season. This weekend marked a big milestone for the club as two Ohio State teams will be competing in the CWPA for the first time ever.

The first game of the weekend for the Buckeyes saw the Scarlet team battling the Musketeers of Xavier University. After shaking off a bit of rust from the car ride, the Scarlet Buckeyes defeated the Musketeers 13-5. Immediately following the Scarlet game, the Gray team started their inaugural CWPA season against last year's runner-up, Grand Valley State. Not being able to match up with their experienced players, the Gray team fell behind 0-10 in the first half, but tied 3-3 in the second half to end the game 3-13.

Scarlet team's second game pitted them against in-state rival, University of Cincinnati. The Buckeyes came out firing and caged the Bearcats on defense, ultimately winning 10-4. Next up for the Gray team was host Miami, and the young Buckeyes showed much improvement but still fell 5-9.

The last game of the day for the Scarlet team was against Grand Valley State, a matchup that many speculate could be the championship game later in the season. It was a close game throughout, but a few mistakes for the Buckeyes lead to them falling 7-10. To end a very long day for the Buckeyes, the Gray team battled the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Buckeyes kept it close for most of the game, but were out swam towards the end of the game and lost 7-12.

Sunday meant only one game for each team, and this time Gray played first. Matched up against the Dayton Flyers, the Gray team got their first CWPA win by a score of 12-8. Scarlet team would end the weekend against conference rival Notre Dame. After being down 3-6 at halftime, the Buckeyes clawed their way back to win 10-9 in thrilling fashion.

Both the Scarlet and Gray teams will be back in action on October 15-16, where the Buckeyes will be hosting the final CWPA Great Lakes division seeding tournament. After that, the Buckeyes will compete for the division championship at Notre Dame on November 5-6.

2nd Annual Katie Johanni Memorial

The Buckeyes kicked off the 2016 season at home, hosting the 2nd annual Katie Johanni Memorial Tournament. This is a charity event in honor of Katie Johanni, a member of the women's team who passed away suddenly due to epilepsy in late 2015. A grand total of $8,480.62 was raised through donations, entry fees, and raffles on the weekend of the event. This money was donated to the Epilepsy Foundation in hopes that a cure will one day be found.

Having graduated a large group of seniors last year, the Scarlet team was eager to begin the year with some different faces leading the charge. The Scarlet Buckeyes' first game pitted them agains the 2015 DIII Club national champion, Washington University in St. Louis. After a close first half, the Buckeyes pulled away to win 16-5. Their next game was a matchup with long time rival, Michigan State. Having last played in the opening round of the 2014 Collegiate Club National Championship where the Buckeyes shocked the Spartans, fans were hoping for another heated battle. The Buckeyes proved to be too strong for the young Spartans, coming away with a 17-8 victory. In their last game of group play, the Buckeyes met conference foe Miami. Again, the Buckeyes cruised to victory, defeating the Redhawks 12-5. This meant they would be playing in the championship game of the Katie Johanni Memorial for the second time in a row. They would meet UK/Columbus, a team comprised of University of Kentucky players as well as many former Buckeyes and other former collegiate players. The experience of UK/Columbus proved to be too much for the Buckeyes, who were narrowly defeated 12-13 to take second in the tournament.

The Gray team did not have quite the same good fortune as the Scarlet team, but with many new additions to the team, there is much promise for this team heading into its inaugural CWPA season. Their first game of the weekend was against the University of Michigan, who finished fifth at last years Collegiate Club National Championships. The Buckeyes couldn't match up with the Wolverines, falling 5-19. The Gray Buckeyes' second game of the day was against the eventual champion, UK/Columbus, and they were again outmatched, falling 9-20. Coming together as a team every game, the Gray Buckeyes narrowly lost to St. Charles 12-19 to complete day one of the tournament. Playing for 7th, the Gray team met Washington University in St. Louis to start the second day of the tournament. Showing much improvement from the beginning of the weekend, the Buckeyes held it close all game, but the DIII national champion proved to be too much, and the Buckeyes lost 6-11.

Both teams will be in action again this weekend, as they will travel to Miami University to begin the CWPA season. Go Bucks!

Spring Semester Recap

The 2016 spring semester brought much success for the Buckeyes. They traveled all over the eastern United States and the Scarlet team went 14-2 for the semester.

To start the semester, the Buckeyes traveled to Chicago to compete in Northwestern University's Winter Classic Invitational. The first opponent was the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa and the Buckeyes defeated the Big Ten foe, 18-10. Next up was two Great Lakes conference opponents and both games ended in victory for the Buckeyes, 12-2 versus Loyola University Chicago and 18-6 versus University of Chicago. Ohio State continued their spring success with a 12-9 win over the Beached Whales.

After their trip to the Windy City, the Buckeyes headed south for the winter to Auburn University. In the opening game of the Chris Young Memorial tournament, Ohio State dismantled Bluff City Water Polo, 14-4. The last game of group play matched the Buckeyes against Emory University, where the Buckeyes won the game, and the group, by a score of 16-1. Sunday morning started with a semifinal matchup against our in-state adversary, University of Cincinnati. Determined to make it back to the championship game for the second straight year, the Buckeyes took down the Bearcats, 10-5. The Buckeyes went on to capture the championship, winning 9-4 against Windy City.

After spring break, the Buckeyes couldn't get enough of the warm weather and headed to the University of North Carolina for the Easter Invitational. The first day of the tournament saw the Buckeyes add three more wins to their season, beating Clemson University (16-7), Virginia Tech (15-4), and former goalie Troy Karski with Charlotte Masters (10-9). An early start to the second day saw the Buckeyes slip up for the first time in the spring, falling 6-12 to NoVa.

The last tournament of the year was at home and it was a special one. Together with a girls team, the Buckeyes hosted the Katie Johanni Memorial tournament, in honor of the women's team's goalie Katie Johanni who passed away in the fall. The teams fundraised over $10,000 to donate to the SUDEP Foundation to fund their research. The men started the tournament with a trio of games against Ohio opponents. First up was the Dayton Flyers, where the Buckeyes won 11-4. Then the Buckeyes faced Columbus Masters and Columbus Youth, beating the old guys, 15-7, and the kids, 14-8. These victories put Ohio State in the championship game against Division II varsity program, Gannon University. A close, physical game ended tied at 6, and the Buckeyes were defeated 3-4 in a shootout. The Grey team also competed and beat conference foe Illinois State (7-6), but fell to Gannon (2-14), club national champion Lindenwood (6-16), and Columbus Water Polo (4-14).

The Buckeyes finished 30-4 on the year, and will look to continue the standard of success of Ohio State water polo next year.

End of Fall Season

The last weekend in October, we hosted the 2015 CWPA Great Lakes Division Championship at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. We had earned the top seed for the tournament and opened up play Saturday morning against the University of Cincinnati, winning 11-5. This put us into the semifinals against University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday night. 

Straying from our usual fast-paced offense in favor of a slow, grind it out offense, the Buckeyes struggled and fell 6-7 in the final seconds, making it the first time we would not be in the championship game since 2012. 

Sunday we found ourselves in the third place game against the University of Notre Dame, but the shock of the loss the night before made it hard for the team to play to our normal level, and the Buckeyes fell again, 7-10, to finish fourth in the conference. 

After taking some time off to mentally recoup, a small group of Buckeyes traveled to a tournament at the University of Toledo to fill a spot in the tournament after a team dropped out. The Buckeyes were a level above the competition, winning the championship and outscoring their four opponents 72-13.

The Buckeyes will use the spring to help prepare them for next season where they hope to return to the level that is expected of them and they are capable of achieving.

Scarlet Team Sweeps in Cincinnati; Gray Team Earns First Victory

This past weekend, the Buckeyes sent two teams down to the Harvest Classic at the University of Cincinnati. The Scarlet (A) team came away as the only undefeated team in the tournament and the Gray (B) team earned their first victory of the season!

The Scarlet team against a CWPA division opponent, the Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati. After getting off to a slow start, the Buckeyes tamed the Bearcats, winning 17-9. Next up, the Gray team took on the University of Dayton, falling 8-11 in a close game. In the Scarlet team's second game of the day, it was their turn to take on the Dayton Flyers where the Buckeyes emerged victorious, winning 17-6. The Gray team's second game, and the last for the Buckeyes on Saturday, put them against the host Ohio Squirrels, where they fell 5-11.

On Sunday, the Buckeyes were up early as the Gray team took on the Ohio Squirrels B team in the first game of the day. Things starting clicking for the Gray team as they won 12-4 for their first victory of the season! The Scarlet team got a little extra rest in comparison, and started their day off against the Squirrels A team. The Buckeyes were tested mentally throughout the game, but were able to pull away and earn a 10-7 win. For the Gray team's last game, they would take shot at the Bearcats, but weren't able to gain another victory, falling 7-11. In the last game of the weekend for the Buckeyes, they took on CWPA division foe, and the third seed in the upcoming division championship, Notre Dame and came away with an easy 15-4 victory over the Fighting Irish.

This weekend was the last tune up for the Buckeyes before Great Lakes division championships at Ohio State on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, where the Buckeyes will look to complete the 3-peat of winning the championship.

Buckeyes Ranked #1 in CWPA Poll!

In the week 2 CWPA poll, the Buckeyes moved into a tie with Lindenwood and Cal Poly for the top overall ranking in the nation.

Buckeyes Sweep Conference Tournament

Last weekend, the Buckeyes traveled to Miami University to compete in their first CWPA tournament of the year. This weekend would see the Buckeyes facing the four teams who finished 2nd through 5th at championships last season.

Grand Valley was the first team to test the Buckeyes in Great Lakes division play. After trading goals to start the game, the Buckeyes found their groove and won 12-9. The Fighting Irish were up next, and the Buckeyes were able to pull out a 13-5 victory.

Sunday morning was a rematch of the 2014 Great Lakes division championship game against University of Illinois-Chicago. The Buckeyes were not going to let it be close like last year, extinguishing the Flames and winning 13-6. In the last game of the weekend, the Buckeyes played the host Redhawks, winning 18-10 in a high scoring affair to secure the top seed at the division championships at Ohio State on October 31 and November 1.

The Buckeyes are now 7-0 on the year, heading into the Harvest Invite at the University of Cincinnati on October 3-4.

Buckeyes Open The Year at Home

Over Labor Day weekend, the team hosted the Buckeye Invitational and ended the weekend undefeated. The first game of the season saw the Buckeyes taking on Bowling Green State University and won easily, 20-3. In the second game of the day, the Buckeyes were up against the division 3 national champion, Washington University in St. Louis, and defeated them 13-5. This ended day one of the tournament, and the Buckeyes went to sleep dreaming of beating the Wolverines in the morning!

The showdown between Ohio State and Michigan on Sunday morning proved to be an exciting match up. A close game until the end, regulation ended with the teams tied 5-5 going into a shootout. Led by outstanding goalkeeping by Michael "Hollywood" Smith and four bar-ins by the shooters, the Buckeyes were victorious, winning the shootout 4-2.

The Buckeyes have their first CWPA tournament October 19-20, where they will play the top teams in the Great Lakes Division (Grand Valley, Notre Dame, University of Illinois-Chicago, and Miami) vying for the top seed at the division championships on Halloween weekend at Ohio State!

Good Ol' Rocky Top

The Buckeyes returned to their favorite spring tournament on April 19th, University of Tennessee's Dogwood Invitational.

Our first game pitted us against a foe from the Sunshine State, the Florida Atlantic Owls. After shaking off some rust from the cold, harsh winter, the Buckeyes won 8-5.

After a couple hours of sunbathing, the Buckeyes faced Big 10 foe Northwestern, and emerged victorious, winning 8-3.

Our last game saw the Buckeyes playing a masters team from Central Florida, Asociación Cristiana de Hombres Jóvenes de CFL. After a long day of fun in the sun, the Buckeyes couldn't play to their usual level, falling 7-15.

Ohio Against The World: Buckeyes win in SEC country

The Buckeyes headed down to Auburn University the weekend of March 7-8 to compete in the Chris Young Memorial Tournament.

In their first game, the Buckeyes defeated University of Kentucky 10-6 to begin our championship run. Next, the Tigers of Auburn University were knocked off by a score of 15-10. In the Sunday morning semifinal matchup against the Auburn Alumni, the Buckeyes emerged victorious, winning 9-5.

This set the Buckeyes up for a championship game against the Seminoles of Florida State. After trailing most of the game, the game was tied in the final minute until sophomore Stephen Ioas pushed the ball into the net during a 6 on 5 opportunity to give the Buckeyes the 12-11 victory.

Buckeyes kick off spring season at Nutty Invite

After being snowed in in Mason, Ohio on Saturday, the Buckeyes competed in the "Mini" Nutty Invite at the University of Cincinnati, hosted by the Ohio Squirrels.

The Scarlet team took home the Squirrel trophy after notching an 11-9 victory over Squirrels, a 15-8 victory over University of Cincinnati, and a 18-10 victory over CWPA conference foe Xavier University.

The Gray team continued to improve and come together as team, earning a 10-4 win over University of Cincinnati B and then falling to the Ohio Squirrels 9-10 and to Moose Water Polo Club 9-12.

The Buckeyes are back in action March 7-8 at Auburn University.

Buckeyes Honored on All-Conference and All-American Teams

The Collegiate Water Polo Association recently released their selections for both All-Conference and All-American teams.

The Buckeyes were well represented in the Great Lakes All-Conference team. Head coach James Dauphinee was named Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year. Ben McClurg was named most valuable player as well as garnering a 1st team All-Conference selection. Junior goalie joined McClurg on the All-Conference 1st team, and senior defender Jon Gruseck earned a 2nd team selection.

These three players also earned All-American selections, with McClurg making 2nd team and Smith and Gruseck earning Honorable Mention selections.

Buckeyes Place 5th at National Collegiate Club Championship

The Buckeyes made their second consecutive trip to the CWPA Club National Championship Tournament November 14-16, this time with theirs sights on making waves after a disappointing and eye-opening experience in 2013. Returning 5 out of 6 starters and leaning heavily on the Sophomore class, the Buckeyes won 3 out of 4 of their games, dropping their only match to the eventual 2014 National Champions, Lindenwood University.

Our first game of the tournament matched the Buckeyes against heavily favored three time National Champion, 5th ranked Michigan State University. Coming out slow, we closed out the first half with a 3-5 deficit, leaving MSU thinking they would run away with the game in the second half.
